Three missions to lead Osaka University
to become a "data-driven university"
Digital design | Datability | Decision intelligence

What is D3 Center?

Osaka University aims to become a data-driven university that uses data in many areas of education, research, and management to solve various social issues. To further advance this initiative, we established a new organization, the D3 Center, on October 1, 2024. This was achieved by merging the Cybermedia Center, which has long supported the development and management of information infrastructure both on and off campus, with the Institute for Datability Science, which explores innovative scientific methods through datability—research focused on digital transformation driven by data.

"D3" is an abbreviation for "Digital design (to digitize and use information)," "Datability (to analyze and make advanced and large amounts of data easy to use)," and "Decision intelligence (to support various types of decision-making)," which indicate the purpose of the center's establishment.

The establishment of the D3 Center, which brings together the two organizations, will create a consistent research system from data generation and collection to data analysis and utilization. This will provide comprehensive support for data science at Osaka University and promote the development of research and education through data.

D3 Center will reorganize the divisions of both organizations by establishing six sub-cores under the Core Missions, which will be responsible for three main missions (data generation and collection, data analysis, and data utilization). In addition, a Data-Driven Core Coordinator will be placed at the center of the three Core Missions to oversee them.

The following institutions have been merged into the D3 Center.
